Silk-Dyed Easter Eggs

I found this tutorial from Our Best Bites last year. We normally don't dye easter eggs, but these seemed like a no mess, fun kind of activity. These photos are from last year, but I wanted you to have the directions to make yours for easter since we haven't done ours yet. 

You will need 100% silk ties, we got ours from good will. These are the ones we choose for this year. We found that darker blues, purples and reds show up the best. The yellows and pale colors are harder to transfer color, but ya never know. The first step is to flip the tie over and snip all the seams to de-construct the tie, you are really just trying to get a big piece of silk. See Our Best Bites for a complete step-by-step tutorial.

Cut a big enough piece to cover your eggs and leave a little extra. You will now wrap the right side(colorful side) of silk around your egg tight. You want to touch as much silk as you can to your egg. When you see folds in the wrapping of your egg you will get more of a blurry look and less patterned effect. Secure them with a twist tie, string or in Davids case, tie-wrap (twist ties are the easiest).

You will now wrap and tie them in a light weight fabric (pillowcase or sheet works well). 

Fill a pot with water covering the eggs and add 1/4 cup vinegar. Bring to a boil for about 20 minutes. Take them out to cool and set in a strainer or towel. They will be too hot to take the ties off.  

Here is what we got last year! You can see that the darker colors showed up best.

These were two of the best ones. 

Tip- rub them with a little cooking oil and they become brighter and glossy. Aren't they so cute!! You can see the parts where the blurriness is, but they still came out great. There really is no mess and the hardest part is to wrap the silk around the eggs tight (don't squeeze too hard).
